Did you know that teatime, probably the most quintiseential of English customs, originally referred to the custom of drinking tea in the late afternoon to satisfy one’s hunger between lunch and dinner? Originating from ancient China, the Tang Dynasty was often referred to as the classic age of tea, where the beverage was valued for everyday refreshment and pleasure. This later evolved into the social events in Britain where women would gather in extravagant outfits for afternoon tea with a spread of sandwiches, cakes and pastries.
Many of the different tea types - green, white, oolong and black are derived actually from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, but are differentiated by the level of oxidisation they undergo! Native to the southwest region of China, varieties of the tea plant are widely cultivated across the world after it was introduced to and made popular in western civilisation in the 17th century. Tea producers combine different types of tea to create different blends, with the most popular among avid tea drinkers being English breakfast and Earl Grey.
Featuring hand-painted decorative teacups with matching saucer made of ceramic or porcelain typically make up a tea set for afternoon tea, pick your favourite teacup amongst the fourteen life-sized ones on display!
Tea for you? It's always teatime here, come by and indulge in a cup of afternoon tea!
This display was made possible by John Lo and family. They would like to dedicate it to the family of Merrill, Dilhan and Malik Fernando of Dilmah Teas, who show that integrity, focus and heart are homegrown values.
