This edition of the Orchid Extravaganza floral display in Flower Dome pays tribute to the nation’s heritage through creative orchid interpretations of iconic local symbols.
A horticultural love letter to a very Singaporean bloom, the highlights include an orchid interpretation of the Supertrees, which has now become synonymous with Singapore’s skyline, a floral tribute to Peranakan culture, recreations of Cultural Medallion recipient Lee Hock Moh’s iconic orchid paintings, and a nod to the orchid’s enduring presence throughout Singapore’s history.

Thick-boned, long-bodied, and symmetrical, most Peranakan houses were built in the Late Shophouse Style between 1900 and 1940. They are known for their ornamentation and explosions of colour seen in their ceramic tiles, plaster bouquets, festoons, and plaques that reflect a confident blend of Chinese lineage, Malay climate sense, and European showmanship.
A traditional Peranakan house may look narrow from the street, but it stretches long and airy within. Placed just behind the main front doors, the pintu pagar allowed fresh air and light in when the grand main front doors were flung wide open – a gesture of welcome – during the day. The finest ones were carved from teak adorned with a mix of Chinese and European motifs comprising lions, phoenixes, peonies, squirrels, and vases.
Real cooking begins with the tum-tum-tum of herbs and spices (most of the time, dried chillies, shallots, garlic) pounded into rempah – sometimes with anger, always with love. Then into the wok, stir fry till... pecah minyak (oil splitting)! That’s when the rempah has given all it has. The very soul of every sambal (chilli-based condiment) and kari (coconut-rich curry dish) begins here.
The traditional sarong kebaya ensemble features a blouse made from imported European voile, fastened with a set of kerosang (a trio of linked brooches), and a batik sarong (wraparound skirt) custom-commissioned with meaningful Nyonya motifs.
Witness the display of Nyonya heritage and glamour by RISIS and Rumah Kim Choo!
See three Supertrees decorated in orchids in Flower Dome: the grandest stands 6.5 metres tall with over 1,800 orchids inside and out, a kaleidoscope of colour and scent; flanked by two smaller sisters, each with their own mix of Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, and Oncidium.
In celebration of SG60, enjoy one complimentary all-access adult ticket to the Peranakan Museum with your Flower Dome ticket, Friends of the Gardens e-card, or SG60 Wonder Blooms pass. Limited redemptions available, valid until 31 Aug 2025.
Papilionanthe (formerly Vanda) Miss Joaquim ‘Agnes’
Recorded as Singapore’s first orchid hybrid and the world’s first Vanda hybrid, it was declared Singapore’s national flower in 1981 for its resilience and year-round blooming habit.
Aranda Noorah Alsagoff
Large, handsome hybrid bred by Syed Yusof Alsagoff, a notable Singapore orchid hybridiser who bred nearly 200 orchids over 50 years. Still a nonpareil Aranda decades later for its blue shading, substance, and floral arrangement.
Mayara Mandai Glow
Brilliant orange-red trigeneric hybrid (Papilionanthe × Vanda × Renanthera) with branching inflorescences. Pollen parent, Renanthera coccinea, has unmatched flowering traits it reliably passes to its hybrids.
Vanda Tan Chay Yan
Received a First Class Certificate at the Chelsea Flower Show in 1954, which helped put Singapore on the world orchid map. Named after the father of the breeder, Peranakan rubber plantation merchant and philanthropist Tan Chay Yan.
Vanda KK Women’s and Children's Hospital
Stunning fuchsia orchid symbolising fertility and new beginnings, with hundreds of freckles (representing the KKH community – staff, volunteers, partners, and patients), created in honour of the hospital’s centenary.
Dendrobium Incredible NUHS Nurses
Orchid with a distinctive orange and yellow lip, named in honour of the nurses of the National University Health System for their dedication, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
