Cambodian cultural showcase

This year marks the 60 years of bilateral relations between Singapore and Cambodia, and to commemorate this significant occasion, a series of cultural and artistic showcases will be held to foster a deeper appreciation of Cambodia’s rich and vibrant cultural heritage. Visitors can look forward to traditional dance performances, live demonstrations of sandstone carving and lacquer painting by Cambodian artisans, as well as a photo exhibition capturing the diplomatic friendship between Singapore and Cambodia.

The Blessing Dance

This dance is very popular in big events and performed for dedication to Gods and Sacred Beings in order to wish for happiness for the Nation and the King. Later, it became a trend to introduce this dance at official opening ceremonies. In this classical piece, the lyrics and gestures describe the wishes for happiness. Flower petals are tossed gently from small golden trays as a way of blessing the audience and the event.

Sovann Machha (Golden Mermaid Dance)

This dance is forming the episode of “Reamker”. In this episode, the White Monkey, Hanuman, falls in love with a mermaid en route to rescue Seda, Rama’s wife, for Ravana, the king of the ogre in the Reamker. After stones placed to build the bridge disappear, Hanuman comes himself to see what is happening and in the process falls in love.

Neary Kampuchea Dance

This dance is performed at important ceremonies as well as to entertain guests. The dance theme, as revealed by the song texts, describes the beauty of Khmer Dance indeed culture as well as the gratitude toward our ancestors, who have carefully preserved and handed down to us this priceless legacy. The songs and gestures of this dance is a warmly welcome from Cambodia women to all visitors in hospitality.

This is a type of prayer dance in the episode of the story titled Cheyjet. It is about the scene where the cat goddess named Vela performs the dance to pray to the higher Gods to bless the son of her master (Champa Thong) to resurrect.
