The Gardens by the Bay Apprenticeship Programme (GAP) is a one-year structured training programme designed to develop a new generation of horticulturists with specialised skills in conservatory management, creative floriculture, applied horticulture, and visitor-centric display delivery. The programme combines classroom-based learning, hands-on training, and on-the-job experience within Gardens by the Bay’s unique operational environment. As part of the programme, apprentices will participate in the development and execution of a floral display in the Flower Dome as their capstone project.

GAP is open to:

• Degree and diploma holders in any discipline, including those from non-horticulture backgrounds, with a strong interest in plants and horticulture
• Mid-career individuals, including those in leadership roles, seeking a career switch into horticulture
• Individuals who are passionate about hands-on, indoor and outdoor, plant-focused work

Prior horticulture experience is preferred but not mandatory, as foundational training will be provided.

No. Applicants do not need prior horticulture qualifications.

The programme supports individuals both with and without horticulture backgrounds, provided they demonstrate strong motivation, commitment, and interest in plant-based work. Successful applicants without prior horticulture training will attend professional foundation horticulture courses conducted by the Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology (CUGE) and will undergo more intensive on-the-job training (OJT) with close mentor guidance.

Apprentices will gain skills and experience in areas such as:

• Conservatory operations and specialist plant care
• Tropical and sub-tropical horticulture
• Creative floriculture and floral display execution
• Plant production planning and scheduling
• Plant selection, taxonomy, and identification
• Applied plant research and monitoring systems
• Visitor experience, storytelling, and sustainability principles

The curriculum is tailored specifically to Gardens by the Bay’s iconic conservatories and floral displays.

The programme runs for one year (12 months).

This includes:

• Foundational horticulture training (for apprentices without prior horticultural background)
• Structured modules delivered by Gardens by the Bay
• On-the-job training rotations across relevant departments
• A capstone project involving real display or horticultural work

Yes. GAP is a full-time programme and requires a high level of commitment.

Apprentices are expected to participate fully in training sessions, operational duties, and project assignments throughout the year.

GAP is a structured apprenticeship-style programme.

Participants are engaged as apprentices for the duration of the programme and will undergo structured training and assessment. Completion of the programme does not automatically guarantee permanent employment, but high-performing apprentices may be considered for suitable opportunities within Gardens by the Bay, subject to organisational needs and availability.

The programme is currently designed as a Gardens by the Bay–run apprenticeship programme.

Gardens by the Bay is exploring potential future accreditation or partnerships. Applicants should apply with the understanding that the initial intake focuses on hands-on training, skills development, and practical experience, rather than formal certification.

Intake numbers will be kept intentionally small to ensure quality training, close supervision, and meaningful hands-on experience.

The inaugural intake of GAP is targeted to commence in July 2026.

Training will be conducted primarily at:

• Gardens by the Bay’s conservatories and outdoor gardens
• Associated plant production and operational facilities

Some modules may include external visits or short overseas exposure, subject to programme design and feasibility.

Horticulture work is hands-on and physically active. Apprentices should expect:

• Working both outdoors and within conservatory environments
• Exposure to varying weather and environmental conditions
• Manual handling, standing, and plant care tasks

Appropriate safety training and supervision will be provided.

GAP prepares participants for roles such as:

• Conservatory horticulturist
• Display or floriculture specialist
• Plant production or horticulture operations roles
