This beautifully complex dome of more than 1,340 purple spider chrysanthemum blooms is all grown on a single plant!
Carefully cultivated over nine months in Southern China using the centuries-old Japanese method of ozukuri, meaning 'thousand-bloom,' this plant started as a single stem - not of chrysanthemum, but of a close relative, wormwood (Artemisia sp.)!
Five sturdy stems of chrysanthemums are grafted onto wormwood rootstock, which gives the plant a strong root system and sturdy base.
As they grow, these five chrysanthemum branches are pruned to promote the growth of side branches which are carefully trimmed, tied, and trained onto a bamboo and wire frame.
Chrysanthemums are usually an autumn flower, triggered to bloom by the shortening day lengths of late summer. Once it grew to display size, this greenhouse-grown plant was tricked into producing buds in the spring by shading it from mid-afternoon to the next morning every day for a few weeks. To get every flower to bloom at the same time, only a single flower bud of the exact same size on each stalk were kept and the rest were removed. Finally, each budding stem was carefully retied on its own precisely-arranged stake for the artful arrangement of blooms you see here!
Dahlias come from different parts of the world and there are thousands of varieties. Generally this flower prefers cooler temperatures, between 15-25 degree Celsius and how long they last depends on the right temperature. In Flower Dome environment, they can last up to a week or more from budding, blooming to wilting.
Did you know Dinnerplate Dahlias can grow up to 30cm in diameter? To achieve this the grower must put the dahlias in the right environment and carry out disbudding or the removal of floral buds to channel the plant's resources to produce larger flowers. Their expert skills are important to achieve the right size of Dinnerplate Dahlias.
