Inspired by the picturesque landscape of Chinese imperial gardens, Dahlia Dreams welcomes Lunar New Year with an elegant display of dahlias, camellias and bromeliads in a courtyard garden setting. Auspicious Southern Lions greet visitors as they enter while Chinese guardian lions (also known as “Foo Dogs”) stand guard.

To celebrate the Year of the Dog, intricate diorama cutouts, exquisite driftwood sculptures and ornamental topiaries in the shape of dogs can be spotted in the display. Adding to the majesty are palace lanterns and umbrella curtains that embellish the garden.

On selected days in February, the God of Fortune will make an appearance in the Flower Dome to spread wealth and prosperity.

As they grow, these five chrysanthemum branches are pruned to promote the growth of side branches which are carefully trimmed, tied, and trained onto a bamboo and wire frame.

Chrysanthemums are usually an autumn flower, triggered to bloom by the shortening day lengths of late summer.  Once it grew to display size, this greenhouse-grown plant was tricked into producing buds in the spring by shading it from mid-afternoon to the next morning every day for a few weeks.   To get every flower to bloom at the same time, only a single flower bud of the exact same size on each stalk were kept and the rest were removed.  Finally, each budding stem was carefully retied on its own precisely-arranged stake for the artful arrangement of blooms you see here!
