How frequently is the SGF held?
The SGF is held once every two years. This is the 6th run of the SGF, and the second time to be held in the Gardens.
Why is the SGF held at GB again this year?
The 2014 edition at GB, with an indoor and outdoor element, was well-received by visitors and industry players. For designers, having SGF at GB presented challenges and opportunities to design a garden in the tropical context of Singapore while for visitors, they were able to enjoy the garden setting. In addition, being able to visit the cooled conservatories at SGF was a plus.
Following the experience in 2014, we have made several changes to enhance the experience for visitors, taking into consideration their feedback. These include a bigger showground to improve crowd flow, nightly concerts and F&B stalls located outside the ticketed area, so that more people can experience SGF 2016.
What are some of the difference between SGF this year and its previous editions?
Firstly, this year, the show is doubling in size and will span across 9.7ha with gardens and floral exhibits being displayed both indoors and outdoors at The Meadow and Bayfront Plaza. Visitors can expect a larger show (5ha in 2014).
This year, there will be 72 floral displays, including 59 competitive displays and 13 non-competitive displays – put together by NParks and GB staff, community gardens, gardening and floral associations. This is an increase from SGF 2014, where there were a total of 50 floral displays (including the competitive displays).
Some other new features include a special Terrarium exhibition and a competitive CUGE Landscape Design Challenge where students will be tested on their skills in designing a garden on-site, within a limited time.
Apart from new offerings, we have retained many of the popular highlights from the past five Festivals. These include the visually stunning Landscape and Fantasy Gardens, vibrant and creative displays at the Floral Windows of the World, the perennial favourite – the Orchid Extravaganza – offering educational and entertainment activities and the Marketplace where a wide array of plants and products will be sold.
Will the Miniature Gardens make a return this Festival? If not, why?
No, the Miniature Gardens will not be returning this year as the designers are not available during the Festival period. However, this year sees the introduction of a new features and competitive categories – including a Terrarium exhibition and Landscape Design Challenge which will see students putting together a garden from scratch within a limited timeframe.
What can we see at this year’s show?
Visitors can expect to see:
Others include the Terrarium Exhibition and the MarketPlace (air-conditioned) featuring over 100 booths offering food & beverages and a wide array of plants, gardening and landscape products and services, and arts and crafts for sale.
Why do I have to pay more for a Standard Double Conservatory tickets (at $33 for adults and seniors, and $20 for child) during this period even though I do not wish to visit the SGF, while there is no price increase for the Local Double Conservatory tickets?
The price of $33 for the Standard Double Conservatory tickets is a special arrangement made during this 9-day period for tourists to visit the award-winning Singapore Garden Festival, which is held once every two years. The small increase of $5 on top of the standard rate of $28 is a very attractive deal considering that visitors will have the opportunity to catch the Festival highlights, such as the landscape show gardens and cut-flower displays created by international gardening celebrities. For those with less time to spare, we are also offering a shorter tour option combining SGF and the Flower Dome at a lower price of $23 during this period only.
Both Gardens by the Bay and the Singapore Garden Festival share the national objective of promoting local community engagement through horticultural programming and activities. We remain committed to keeping the ticket price of the Festival and the conservatories affordable to Singaporeans and Singapore residents.
