Community Lantern Painting for Members
“We have been Friends of the Gardens for the past 4 years as we enjoy our visits to Flower Dome. We signed up for this event as I hope to let my kids decorate the lanterns with their creativity.”
shared Ms Ho who came with her 3 children (photo above).
“I enjoyed the craft work and look forward to attend more of such events!”
says Ms Eleanor Chan, an Individual Adult member (photo on the left).
Friends of the Gardens joined us in Community Lantern Painting held on 18 August at the Canopy, as part of the run-up to Mid-Autumn @ Gardens by the Bay. Members put forth their own interpretation of the "Autumn of Fantasies" theme, using a colourful palette of acrylic paint and magic ink. The completed lanterns were exhibited in the Gardens during Mid-Autumn Festival (6 – 24 Sep), as part of the “Colonnade of Lights” lantern display.
Singapore Garden Festival 2018
From 21 July to 3 August, the biennial Singapore Garden Festival (SGF) welcomed visitors to a magical world of exciting garden designs and exquisite floral creations. What’s more, Friends of the Gardens were able to enjoy the festivities with a specially-priced $5 SGF top-up ticket.
Festival highlights included the Landscape and Fantasy Gardens featuring creations by top award-winning garden luminaires from around the world, Floral Windows to the World, Balcony Gardens and Market Place, among others.
In Flower Dome, the creative direction and concept for this year’s Orchid Extravaganza floral display was led by award-winning filmmaker Royston Tan. Set amidst a vivid backdrop of Peranakan shop houses, the colourful floral display was a perfect reflection of Singapore's multicultural people and heritage.
Gardens by the Bay Celebrates National Day
The Gardens celebrated Singapore’s National Day with an array of Peranakan-themed programmes that showcased the rich Peranakan culture. From 4 to 22 August, families enjoyed activities that included a Peranakan beading demonstration, tile painting workshop and fashion show.
On 9 August, members and visitors at the Supertree Grove were treated to a refreshing morning yoga session, unique performances, a silent disco, and films depicting uniquely Singapore stories in the pop-up cinema!
Exclusive Flower Dome Guided Tour for Members
90 Friend of the Gardens attended a members-only guided tour of Flower Dome on 4 August conducted by our Gardens’ volunteers. Here are some photos of the event.
Begonia Brilliance Floral Display
In Gardens by the Bay’s first-ever Begonia Brilliance floral display, over 600 begonias in brilliant shades of red, pink, orange and yellow were exhibited from 25 May to 1 July. Visitors delved into imaginary worlds such as an undersea realm where octopuses, manta rays and giant clams reigned.
Fun fact: The spectacularly large Begonias in the floral display were grown by the Gardens’ very own Research and Horticultural team!
Children’s Festival and Cartoon Network Animate Your Life
Over the school holidays, the Gardens came alive with Children’s Festival and Cartoon Network Animate Your Life – held at the Supertree Grove and Bayfront Plaza respectively from 26 May to 10 June.
The inspiration for the Children’s Festival came from author Enid Blyton’s popular children’s books, “The Magic Faraway Tree”. Kids loved performances and activities that included a “Follow the Leaves” musical production, a Witch & Goblin show, balloon sculpting, magic tricks, and meet-and-greet sessions with their favourite characters Silky the Fairy, Moon-Face and Saucepan Man. Members also enjoyed $2 savings on a Magic Pass to ticketed activities.
Meanwhile, visitors to Cartoon Network Animate Your Life embarked on an adventure in the Land of Ooo, visited Powerpuff’s Townsville, tested their skills at a Ben 10 boot camp, and hung out with Grizz, Panda and Ice Bear in their cosy cave! Friends of the Gardens also enjoyed a discount on admission tickets to this event.
